Draw up using a 5 micron filter needle

Methods of intravenous administration

Slow intravenous injection

  • Administer required dose over 3 to 5 minutes (ref 1)

Dose in adults

Acute dystonia

  • A dose of 5 to 10mg is usually effective within five to ten minutes
  • Occasionally, patients may need more than 10mg, and may require up to 30 minutes to obtain relief
  • Advised daily maximum dose by intravenous injection = 20mg
  • Elderly patients may require a reduction in dose

Other indications

  • Similar doses are used intravenously as those given orally
  • Usually given intravenously only when unable to take oral medications
  • Elderly patients may require a reduction in dose
