Methods of intravenous administration
Slow intravenous injection
- Administer required dose over 3 to 5 minutes (ref 1)
Dose in adults
Acute dystonia
- A dose of 5 to 10mg is usually effective within five to ten minutes
- Occasionally, patients may need more than 10mg, and may require up to 30 minutes to obtain relief
- Advised daily maximum dose by intravenous injection = 20mg
- Elderly patients may require a reduction in dose
Other indications
- Similar doses are used intravenously as those given orally
- Usually given intravenously only when unable to take oral medications
- Elderly patients may require a reduction in dose
