Hyoscine butylbromide Intravenous for Adults

Who can administer

May be administered by registered competent doctor or nurse/midwife

Available preparations

Buscopan 20mg per 1ml ampoule

Reconstitution

Draw up using a 5 micron filter needle

Already in solution

May be diluted with Sodium chloride 0.9% or Glucose 5% if required

Methods of intravenous administration

Slow Intravenous Injection (ref 1)

  • Administer over 3 to 5 minutes (rapid administration may cause a marked drop in blood pressure)

Dose in adults

Usual dose

  • Give 20mg stat, repeated after thirty minutes if required (may be required more frequently in endoscopy)
  • Maximum daily dose 100mg (this is not applicable in palliative care situations where the drug is given via subcutaneous syringe driver)

Monitoring

As hyoscine butylbromide may cause tachycardia, hypotension and anaphylaxis, use with caution in patients with cardiac conditions and in cardiac surgery.  Monitoring of these patients is advised.
