Propranolol Intravenous for Adults

Who can administer

May be administered by registered competent doctor or nurse/midwife (doctor present)

Important information

  • Must not be used if there is a history of asthma or bronchospasm
  • Intravenous doses are much lower than those used orally
  • Unlicensed preparation
  • May block or modify signs or symptoms of hypoglycaemia

Dociton 1mg per 1mL ampoule

Reconstitution

Already in solution

Draw up using a 5 micron filter needle

Infusion fluids

Not required - product ready for use

Methods of intravenous administration

Bolus intravenous injection

  • Administer required dose over 1 minute

Dose in adults

Arrhythmias and thyrotoxic crisis

  • Give 1mg over one minute
  • If necessary, repeat at two minute intervals
  • Maximum total dose 10mg (5mg in adults under anaesthesia)

Monitoring

  • Continuous pulse, blood pressure and ECG monitoring required
