Important information
- Restricted to micro/ID advice only (Red-light antimicrobial)
- If documented immediate, or severe delayed hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin: DO NOT GIVE THIS DRUG

Sodium chloride 0.9% or Glucose 5%
Methods of intravenous administration
Intermittent intravenous infusion
- Add required dose to 100 to 250mL infusion fluid - choice of volume depends on clinical status of patient
- The total time between starting reconstitution of the drug and completing preparation of the intravenous infusion should not exceed 30 minutes
- Administer over 5 to 60 minutes (for twelve-hourly doses), or 120 minutes (for eight-hourly doses)
- Infusion related reactions can be managed by prolonging infusion duration
- A 50ml infusion may be used if required (eg fluid restriction) but the residual volume in the infusion line must be flushed through at the same rate to avoid significant underdosing
Dose in adults
Standard dose
- Give 600mg every twelve hours
High dose
- Give 600mg every eight hours
