Metronidazole Intravenous for Adults

Who can administer

May be administered by registered competent doctor or nurse/midwife

Important information

• Cefuroxime doses of either 750mg or 1.5g may be added to the metronidazole bag ^{(ref 1)}
• Remind patient that alcohol must be avoided during therapy, and for 48 hours afterwards, because of the possibility of a disulfiram-like reaction.

Methods of intravenous administration

Intermittent intravenous infusion

• Usually administered over 20 minutes (range 20 to 60 minutes)

Dose in adults

Usual dose

• Give 500mg every eight hours

Severe liver disease

• Consider dose reduction in severe impairment (risk of decreased clearance)
