Propranolol Intravenous for Adults
Who can administer
May be administered by registered competent doctor or nurse/midwife (doctor present)
Important information
- Must not be used if there is a history of asthma or bronchospasm
- Intravenous doses are much lower than those used orally
- Unlicensed preparation
- May block or modify signs or symptoms of hypoglycaemia
Available preparations
Dociton 1mg per 1mL ampoule
Reconstitution
Already in solution
Draw up using a 5 micron filter needle
Infusion fluids
Not required - product ready for use
Methods of intravenous administration
Bolus intravenous injection
- Administer required dose over 1 minute
Dose in adults
Arrhythmias and thyrotoxic crisis
- Give 1mg over one minute
- If necessary, repeat at two minute intervals
- Maximum total dose 10mg (5mg in adults under anaesthesia)
Monitoring
- Continuous pulse, blood pressure and ECG monitoring required
