Ibuprofen Intravenous Infusion for Adults

Who can administer

May be administered by registered competent doctor or nurse/midwife

Important information

  • Ibuprofen (IV route) is indicated for short term use when other routes of administration are not possible - usual maximum three days
  • Check whether NSAIDs are also being given by other routes - to avoid inadvertant duplication of therapy
  • Consider switch to oral treatment as soon as possible
  • Ensure adequate hydration to minimise risk of renal adverse reactions

Methods of intravenous administration

Intermittent intravenous infusion

  • Administer over 30 minutes

Dose in adults

Dose

  • Give 400mg every 6 to 8 hours (maximum licensed daily dose is 1200mg)

Renal impairment

  • Mild/moderate impairment: reduce initial dose and use at lowest dose and for the shortest duration possible
  • Severe impairment: contraindicated

Hepatic impairment

  • Mild/moderate impairment: reduce initial dose and use at lowest dose and for the shortest duration possible
  • Severe impairment: contraindicated

Monitoring

  • Monitor for signs of gastrointestinal bleeding, ulceration or perforation
  • Monitor for signs of bronchospasm, urticaria or angioedema
  • Monitor for oedema, hypertension and cardiac failure
