Hyoscine butylbromide Intravenous for Adults

Who can administer

May be administered by registered competent doctor or nurse/midwife

Available preparations

Buscopan 20mg per 1ml ampoule

Reconstitution

Draw up using a 5 micron filter needle

Already in solution

Dilute with Sodium chloride 0.9% or Glucose 5% to aid slow administration (volume not critical) (ref 1)

Methods of intravenous administration

Slow Intravenous Injection (ref 1)

  • Administer over at least 3 minutes
  • Use diluted injection solution to aid in slow administration (as rapid administration can cause marked hypotension and anaphylactic shock). However, may be given undiluted if required. (ref 1)

Dose in adults

Usual dose

  • Give 20mg stat, repeated after thirty minutes if required (may be required more frequently in endoscopy)
  • Maximum daily dose by intravenous route is 100mg

Monitoring

As hyoscine butylbromide may cause tachycardia, hypotension and anaphylaxis, use with caution in patients with cardiac conditions and in cardiac surgery.  Monitoring of these patients is advised.
