Granisetron Intravenous for Adults

Who can administer

May be administered by registered competent doctor or nurse/midwife

Granisetron 1mg per 1ml ampoule

Kytril 1mg per 1ml ampoule

Reconstitution

Already in solution

Dilute further prior to administration

Draw up using a 5 micron filter needle

Infusion fluids

Sodium Chloride 0.9%

Glucose 5%

Methods of intravenous administration

Can use either method of administration- choice depends on practicalities such as time available, fluid status of patient, etc.

Bolus intravenous injection

• Dilute 1mg to 5ml with infusion fluid and give over at least 30 seconds
• Dilute 3mg to 15ml with infusion fluid and give over at least 30 seconds

Intermittent intravenous infusion:

• Dilute required dose in 20 to 50ml of infusion fluid and administer over five minutes
• The residual volume in the infusion line must be flushed through at the same rate to avoid significant underdosing

Dose in adults

Post operative nausea and vomiting

• Give 1mg stat, with a maximum of 3 doses (3mg) in 24 hours

Nausea associated with cytostatic therapy (Prevention)

• Give 1 to 3mg, five minutes prior to the start of chemotherapy

Nausea associated with cytostatic therapy (Treatment)

• Give 1 to 3mg generally, additional doses should be administered at least 10 minutes apart.
• Maximum of 9mg in 24 hours

Monitoring

• Monitor QTc, especially in patients with cardiac co-mobidities, on cardiotoxic chemotherapy and/or with electrolyte abnormalities

Storage

• Store below 25⁰C
• Do not freeze
